Because the alert was tied to a violent crime, officers responded with urgency. On Thursday, Brookfield officers surrounded Newell's vehicle with weapons drawn, forcing a passenger to put their hands out the window in full view of traffic and onlookers, Richman reports.

The horror of these encounters was entirely avoidable. Milwaukee police later admitted that the alert should have been removed from the system days prior, but an employee simply forgot to delete it.

Brookfield’s police chief has defended the actions of his officers, arguing they responded appropriately based on the information provided by the system. On the surface, that logic holds—no officer wants to ignore a homicide alert. However, this creates a dangerous loop where the automation is trusted implicitly, and the human cost is externalized to the citizen.
