Nexus Mods Acquires SteamDB

Nexus Mods, the largest platform for sharing game mods, has acquired SteamDB, as Engadget first reported via an announcement on the company's website. SteamDB, which tracks price history, player charts, and updates for the Steam catalog, was launched in 2013 as a hobby by individuals known as Marlamin and xPaw.

Reporting from Engadget indicates that the acquisition came after xPaw, who eventually managed the site alone, sought a partner capable of providing long-term stability, development capacity, and resources. xPaw stated that the rise of AI in a post-COVID environment contributed to his decision to step away from the project he had managed for his entire adult life.

Nexus Mods intends to keep the SteamDB name and maintain its current functionality in the short term. However, the company plans to implement behind-the-scenes changes, utilizing a dedicated team to improve the site's scalability, security, and infrastructure. Nexus Mods also intends to begin funding the Steam keys used to track game files, a process that previously relied on community donations.

For Nexus Mods, the acquisition provides a wealth of historical data that will help the platform better track which game versions players are using for mods, which is critical since game updates often break mod functionality. xPaw expressed confidence that the transition would help the project survive and continue serving gamers, publishers, and developers.
