Microsoft Edge to Phase Out Manifest V2 Extensions

Microsoft is ending support for the Manifest V2 (MV2) extensions platform for its Edge browser, a move that mirrors actions taken by Google Chrome earlier this year. According to reporting from The Verge, this transition will disable several ad blockers, including uBlock Origin.

Microsoft states that only 58 extensions in the Edge Add-On Store with "any meaningful usage" still rely on MV2, and only three of those lack an alternative on the newer Manifest V3 (MV3) platform. To maintain ad-blocking capabilities, Microsoft suggests users switch to alternatives such as uBlock Origin Lite. Other options include migrating to browsers that continue to support MV2, such as Firefox or Opera; the latter has stated it will maintain support for as long as it remains "technically reasonable."

Beginning this month, Microsoft will gradually disable remaining MV2 extensions by default, starting with the Dev, Beta, and Canary channels before moving to the Stable channel. The company intends to complete the transition for all consumer users by the end of 2026. While managed devices will not be impacted during the initial consumer rollout, Microsoft plans to shut down MV2 extensions for enterprise users in early 2027. Users will be notified in advance and directed toward recommended MV3 versions when available.
