While brands such as ADT, SimpliSafe, and Vivint offer base stations that act as hubs for sensors and alarms, many critical features remain locked behind paywalls. Wired notes that subscription services typically restrict access to video storage for reviewing past events, as well as detailed notification histories. For example, Wired reports that Abode's base level of service may notify a user that a lock was interacted with, but requires a paid membership to explain how the interaction occurred.

Professional live monitoring is almost exclusively a paid service. This includes agents who can call emergency services or police when an alarm is triggered, or specialists who review live footage and use microphones to speak to intruders. According to Wired, these premium subscription tiers can cost as much as a typical monthly grocery run.

To avoid these costs and prevent strangers from viewing property cameras, Wired suggests building a DIY system focused on local storage. This approach allows users to monitor movement and capture video footage without being locked into the cloud or paying recurring fees for basic access to their own security feeds.
