As first reported by The Register, the Defense Ministry’s Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of Ukraine discovered an Nvidia Jetson Orin module within the wreckage of a Russian S-71 Monochrome cruise missile.
The S-71M is an air-launched weapon capable of autonomous operation, utilizing onboard computing and optical sensors to locate and strike targets. GUR stated that the presence of the Nvidia component suggests the missile employs artificial intelligence technologies. Photos released by GUR identify the specific hardware as a Jetson Orin NX 16GB unit (stamped with identifier TE980M-A1), a chip released by Nvidia in early 2023.
Nvidia ceased direct business operations in Russia in 2022. Because the recovered chip was released after that exit, it must have reached Russian military developers through third-party channels. In a statement to The Register, an Nvidia spokesperson noted that Orin modules are consumer-grade hardware and are not intended for military applications. The spokesperson added that while the chips are not supposed to be available in Russia, they can be acquired through various reseller channels, noting, "Pre-owned Jetsons are available through many reseller channels."
Nvidia stated it will take appropriate action if it determines a customer is violating U.S. export controls, though the company acknowledged it cannot track products once they have been sold.
For GUR, the recovery of the chip serves as evidence that current international sanctions and export control regimes are failing. The intelligence agency argued that the discovery demonstrates a need for increased coordination and sanctions pressure. GUR also noted that the reliance on foreign silicon indicates that Russian domestic tech manufacturing remains insufficient. Additionally, GUR reported finding Chinese-made electronics in Russian weaponry.
