Amazon is investing in a natural gas-burning power plant in Pecos County, Texas, to fuel its first off-the-grid data center, according to reporting from Ars Technica. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy noted during a July 30 earnings call that demand for AI and chips is "exploding," with supply expected to lag behind demand into 2027.
In a statement to Ars Technica, Amazon argued that on-site generation prevents the project from straining the grid or increasing electricity costs for Texas residents. The company stated the plant is designed to transition to grid-connected service as timelines allow, potentially adding energy supply for local customers in the future. However, Ars Technica notes that Amazon did not respond to questions regarding the public health impacts of gas turbines, which are linked to lung cancer, heart disease, and asthma.
