TP-Link Debuts Wi-Fi 8 Hardware Ahead of Official Standard

TP-Link has unveiled its first wave of hardware targeting the upcoming Wi-Fi 8 specification, featuring the Archer 8 Ultra tri-band router and the Deco 8 Ultra mesh system. As reported by The Verge, the products were introduced at IFA 2026 and utilize the IEEE 802.11bn standard.

According to TP-Link, the new hardware focuses on resolving connectivity issues users frequently encounter rather than prioritizing speed increases. The Archer 8 Ultra is equipped with 18 internal antennas and can reach wireless speeds of 19Gbps and wired speeds of 10Gbps. The Deco 8 Ultra mesh system supports over 200 devices and can cover 9,800 square feet with a three-pack, offering wireless speeds up to 22Gbps and 10Gbps wired connectivity.

This product push comes despite the fact that the Wi-Fi 8 standard is not expected to receive final certification until May 2028. Furthermore, the Wi-Fi 7 standard was only finalized in January 2024, meaning these new devices arrive before many consumers have upgraded to the previous generation.

TP-Link has not disclosed pricing but stated that preorders for the Archer 8 Ultra will begin in select regions on September 30. The Deco 8 Ultra is slated for release in Q1 2027, with additional Wi-Fi 8 products—including the Roam 8 travel router, adapters, and range extenders—expected in Q2 2027.

Reporting from The Verge notes that TP-Link is utilizing chipsets from Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Broadcom. The company claims it is employing US-led software and hardware engineering to ensure reliability, a move intended to address concerns regarding the US ban on foreign-made routers.
