The impetus for this shift is clear: AI developers are already hacking together makeshift server farms using Apple's consumer hardware. The Information reports that OpenAI has purchased "tens of thousands" of Mac Studios and Mac minis to facilitate trial-and-error reinforcement learning for AI agents. Similarly, Anthropic has been renting Mac minis via Amazon Web Services.
