Sony Expands PlayStation Pulse Lineup With Planar Magnetic Tech

Sony has announced two new wireless headsets, the PlayStation Pulse and the Pulse Edge, according to reporting from Engadget. Both models utilize planar magnetic drivers, a technology Sony integrated into its lineup following the acquisition of the premium brand Audeze.
Unlike standard drivers, planar magnetic systems use thin, flat diaphragms positioned between magnets. Engadget reports that this design is intended to provide cleaner bass and lower distortion. Sony claims this technology helps players better identify directional audio cues, such as footsteps in first-person shooters.
While both headsets support Bluetooth and PlayStation Link—which allows for ultra-low latency and seamless switching between PC, Mac, PlayStation Portal, and PS5—the two models differ in hardware. Engadget notes that the Pulse Edge features double the magnets of the standard Pulse model for deeper bass, along with active noise cancellation and a detachable boom microphone. Sony has not yet released pricing or availability for the new headsets. However, Engadget points to the current market for context: the Pulse Elite retails for $149 on Amazon, while the PlayStation version of the Audeze Maxwell 2, revealed at CES 2026, is priced at $329.
