Japan's NEC is testing a new parking system designed to eliminate charges incurred while drivers search for a spot or prepare to leave a facility. According to reporting from The Register, the technology—developed in partnership with Japanese company UrbanChain—will only begin charging a customer once they have actually exited their vehicle.

Traditional parking systems typically start the billing clock the moment a driver enters a facility. NEC's proposed model uses AI analysis of real-time video and cameras to detect the exact moment a driver pulls into a spot and leaves the car. The companies will conduct tests in September to determine the number of cameras required to make the system feasible.

Beyond the billing shift, NEC noted the technology enables "data utilization services" for commercial facilities. These services can be used to analyze visitor trends and monitor the number of occupants exiting vehicles. NEC and UrbanChain also suggest the system could improve safety by identifying drivers who remain in their cars for extended periods, which may indicate illness, and by encouraging safer driving since customers are not charged while searching for parking.

For retail and e-commerce operators, this represents a move toward "invisible" transactions, where the friction of the payment trigger is removed entirely from the consumer's immediate experience.
