Microsoft Merges Dueling Copilot Apps into Single 'Superapp'

Microsoft has begun rolling out a unified Copilot app, merging its consumer-facing app and Microsoft 365 Copilot into a single entity, as The Register first reported. According to a help page update, the move is intended to create a more cohesive experience for business and consumer users by simplifying the app ecosystem.
The new structure integrates the Copilot bot and image generation tools alongside Microsoft 365 files and productivity software. While users can now switch between personal, work, or school profiles within one app, functionality remains tiered. Microsoft stated that free users face lower usage limits, while those who purchase a Microsoft 365 subscription gain access to higher limits, agents, and complex multi-step tasks.
However, the merger involves the removal of several features. The Register reports that Microsoft is scrapping Group Chat and Podcasts, as well as removing Deep Research from the consumer app. Group chat content and images will be wiped, and saved podcasts will become unavailable; Microsoft has advised users to manually download this content before the August 18 deadline. Deep Research reports will be preserved for Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers, while Premium subscribers are directed to use the separate Researcher feature.
Windows Central reports that the rollout is starting with web and mobile versions, with an early-access option available for Mac and Windows. A broader desktop rollout is expected by the middle of next month, though Windows Central noted it could not confirm this specific timeline with Microsoft.
