The chipmaker targets a 15-20% share of the AI datacenter market, but analysts question the feasibility of the goal.
MediaTek is preparing a $5 billion financing package to pivot into the AI datacenter silicon market, according to reporting from The Register. The company's board approved the funding to secure supply chain capacity and expand from AI application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) into full-scale platforms.
During a Q2 2026 earnings call, MediaTek CEO Dr. Rick Tsai stated that the rise of frontier AI models and "agentic AI"—which involves planning, reasoning, and self-correction—is driving compute demand across edge and cloud environments. MediaTek expects its AI datacenter ASIC revenue to surpass $2 billion in 2026, with further growth projected for next year. The company estimates it can capture 15% to 20% of a market it values at up to $80 billion for next year.
MediaTek has developed its first ASIC family in partnership with major US cloud service providers, with production slated for the fourth quarter of this year. A second AI accelerator is currently in development for high-volume production in 2028.
However, MediaTek enters a crowded field. The Register notes the company faces competition from Marvell, Broadcom, and Google, the latter of which announced plans earlier this year to sell its custom tensor processing units (TPUs). Gaurav Gupta, a VP Analyst at Gartner, expressed skepticism regarding MediaTek's targets, noting that the company's market share for AI accelerators in compute electronics was less than 1% in 2024. Gupta stated that while MediaTek has seen some traction with custom accelerators, including with Google, a 15-20% market share goal appears "very high."
