LG Unveils Mask-Free OLED Manufacturing Process

LG has introduced a manufacturing breakthrough for OLED panels called FLiPP, or FMM-less Innovative Pixel Patterning, which removes the need for the fine metal masks (FMMs) typically used to stencil organic LEDs into pixel patterns, according to Engadget.

The company also noted that the process is free from resolution and size constraints, making it applicable to devices ranging from 1-inch wearables and VR headsets to ultra-large TVs.
In practical application, LG stated that the technology allows for better utilization of mother glass—up to 64 percent higher when producing laptop panels—which reduces substrate waste and lowers manufacturing costs. LG plans to deploy the technology first in monitors and tablets before expanding to other product categories, though Engadget notes that LG has not yet provided a specific market release date.
