Accel Closes $550 Million India Fund Amid Global Fundraising Push

Accel has closed an oversubscribed $550 million India fund, according to reporting from TechCrunch. The raise was completed within weeks and forms part of a larger $3.5 billion coordinated global fundraising effort that included dedicated funds for Europe and the U.S., as well as a $1.35 billion growth vehicle.
Notably, the new fund arrives while Accel still possesses over 55% of its previous $650 million India fund for investment. Accel partner Shekhar Kirani told TechCrunch that the firm will continue to utilize the previous fund until the new capital is deployed starting in 2027.
Accel is betting on a startup wave driven by fintech, consumer internet, and advanced manufacturing, viewing artificial intelligence as a horizontal technology supporting these sectors rather than a standalone category. Partner Prayank Swaroop told TechCrunch that the firm sees a significant opportunity in the application layer, focusing on AI-powered software and infrastructure rather than competing with foundation model companies like Anthropic or OpenAI.
Kirani cited RapidClaims, an Accel-backed startup automating medical coding for U.S. healthcare providers, as an example of combining AI with domain expertise. He added that the quality of founders and ideas is significantly higher than in previous years.
The move comes as other global firms renew their India focus. TechCrunch reports that Peak XV Partners recently raised $1.3 billion for India and Southeast Asia, General Catalyst committed $5 billion to India over five years, and Lightspeed Venture Partners is reportedly exploring a $300 million to $350 million India-focused fund.
