ZuckOff App Aims to Detect Meta Smart Glasses

A new Bluetooth detection tool attempts to alert users to the presence of wearable cameras as concerns over unsolicited filming grow.
A new free app called ZuckOff is allowing users to detect the presence of smart glasses in their vicinity, as Wired Middle East first reported. Developed by 30-year-old Polish developer Pawel Szydlowski, the tool identifies devices by matching unique identifiers with manufacturer fingerprints. According to Wired Middle East, Szydlowski purchased the hardware himself to build the database, which flags models including Snap Spectacles, Oakley Meta, and Ray-Ban Meta.
The app arrives amid rising public safety concerns regarding unsolicited filming, which has led some cinemas and schools to ban the devices. Wired Middle East reports that approximately seven million pairs of Meta smart glasses were sold in 2025. While Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth stated in an Instagram video that the cameras were designed to be noticed, Wired Middle East notes that a primary commercial proposition of the product is that the camera does not look like one. Furthermore, the recording indicator lights can be easily disabled with tape.
In response to tampering, Meta announced in July it would release an update to stop filming if the LED light is destroyed or tampered with. Other risks have already emerged; Wired Middle East cites a January BBC investigation that found content filmed with Meta glasses, including a post featuring a 21-year-old woman's phone number and face that reached over 1.3 million views.
ZuckOff uses signal strength to provide proximity information but cannot identify the wearer or confirm if recording is active. The app has seen over 5,000 downloads on Apple's App Store and 1,000 on the Google Play Store. While the basic scanner is free, a Pro version offers CSV export, alerts, and background monitoring.
