Reports suggest Google's video platform is negotiating with publishers to integrate audiobooks, potentially bundling the service with YouTube Premium.
YouTube is reportedly preparing to enter the audiobook market as soon as next year, as Engadget first reported via The Wall Street Journal. The platform has spent the previous several months in discussions with publishers to establish the offering.
While YouTube has not officially confirmed the move, The Wall Street Journal reports that the company has considered bundling the audiobook feature into its YouTube Premium ad-free subscription, which currently costs $16 per month. It remains unclear if the service will include individual book sales or if the subscription fee will cover all listening.
The move comes as YouTube grapples with a rise in unauthorized book recordings, specifically those generated by AI robotic voices, which currently exist on the platform alongside public domain titles.
YouTube enters a competitive landscape dominated by established players. Engadget notes that Spotify offers several tiers, including a $10 per month "Audiobooks Access" plan and a $12 per month "Audiobooks+" add-on, both providing 15 hours of listening. Meanwhile, Amazon's Audible offers a $9 per month Standard membership providing one book per month, and a $15 Premium membership that includes one monthly credit for a permanent title and access to an all-you-can-listen catalog.
