I've always been skeptical of the 'privacy' promises found in a settings menu. While companies love to talk about encryption, the real-world hardware is often doing something entirely different. Now, we're looking at a scenario where your smartphone isn't just a communication tool—it's essentially a digital license plate that follows you from the driveway to the office.

As Ars Technica first reported, a security company called Leonardo is marketing a system called SignalTrace. The premise is straightforward and unsettling: the system works alongside automatic license plate readers to detect signals broadcast by consumer devices, such as Bluetooth or radio frequency identification tags.

Here is how the mechanism works in practice. Imagine you commute with a colleague. As your car passes a reader, the camera logs the plate and links it to the registered owner. Simultaneously, sensors pick up the signals from your phone and your colleague's smartwatch. Over time, the software recognizes these devices as a recurring 'electronic signature' associated with that specific vehicle.

In my view, this is where the 'anonymous' argument falls apart. Leonardo claims in an explanatory sheet that SignalTrace "does not identify people" because it only collects electronic signatures that don't disclose a legal name. But as Ars Technica points out, that is a dangerously narrow definition of identity. If a nameless signal repeatedly appears with a specific car or outside a specific home, investigators can easily deduce who owns the device.

Leonardo's own product page admits the system stores these electronic fingerprints for future queries and can even recognize a vehicle without ever seeing its license plate. A separate product sheet notes the tech helps identify suspects based on the specific mix of devices they carry. Essentially, the system creates a searchable pattern of movement and association that police can use to track targets across different locations.

We are already seeing this move from theory to deployment. Ars Technica reports that several of these devices are installed in Oxon Hill, Maryland, and predecessor technology has appeared on an official New York state contract price list.

From a legal standpoint, the ground is shifting. Ars Technica notes that the Supreme Court has previously recognized a reasonable expectation of privacy regarding physical movements in *Carpenter v. United States*. More recently, in the June 2026 decision *Chatrie v. United States*, the court ruled that obtaining location data—even anonymized records used to narrow down a list of suspects in a bank robbery—constitutes a Fourth Amendment search.

While the court hasn't specifically ruled on whether the wireless signals captured by SignalTrace count as a search, the risk is clear. When your device's unique signal is tethered to your car's registration, the lack of a name in the initial data packet provides almost no actual protection.
