The platform is replacing its passive revenue-sharing model with a curated system that rewards specific types of creative output.
X is overhauling its creator monetization strategy by winding down its existing Revenue Sharing program in favor of a new system called Original Content Rewards. According to TechCrunch, X has already stopped accepting new participants for the previous program, which will officially shut down after September 7. Existing participants can apply for the new rewards program starting September 8.
While the previous system focused on ad-revenue splits, the new model specifically targets "originality." As reported by Engadget, the program aims to reward users who provide original ideas, reporting, expertise, and creativity. X defines original content as including original reporting and analysis, photos and videos captured by the poster, and self-designed graphics or memes. While commentary is permitted, X notes that content incorporating material from others must contribute "meaningful original value" to qualify. Posts that are simply copied, re-uploaded, or reposted without "meaningful transformation" will not be eligible for payment.
Allegra Jacchia of X stated that the previous program's incentives were "misaligned," arguing that creators should focus on bringing "net new content" to the platform rather than maximizing payouts. This shift follows earlier attempts in April to reduce payments to "clickbait" accounts and aggregators, as reported by TechCrunch.
To qualify for the new program, users must be at least 18 years old, live in a supported country, and maintain a Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription. Eligibility thresholds include having at least 500 verified followers and generating 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users within a 90-day window. Engadget notes that these requirements must be maintained to continue receiving payouts.
