The Pixel Tax: Raspberry Pi's New 10.1-Inch Display Forces a Hardware Upgrade

Raspberry Pi's latest screen offers more resolution, but only if you're willing to shell out for a Pi 5 to drive it.

OPINION: We have seen this play before. A company releases a 'premium' accessory that looks great on a spec sheet, only to reveal that your existing hardware is suddenly obsolete. Raspberry Pi is doing exactly that with its latest screen release.

As The Register first reported, Raspberry Pi has launched a 10.1-inch model of its Touch Display 2. On the surface, the specs are an improvement: a native portrait resolution of 1,200 x 1,920 pixels, 24-bit RGB color, and ten simultaneous touch points—doubling the five-point touch capacity of smaller models. It's aimed at the dashboard and entertainment system market, priced at $80.

The catch: the display supports only the Raspberry Pi 5 and Compute Modules. If you are rocking an older Pi, you are locked out.

Raspberry Pi justifies this hardware wall by pointing to the increased pixel count. A spokesperson told The Register that the higher resolution necessitates four DSI lanes of data to communicate with the host, whereas previous displays only used two. The company notes that the newer display connector on the Pi 5 and Compute Module IO Boards is what enables this support.

For the consumer, this is a classic case of hardware creep. The Register points out that requiring a Pi 5 could be irritating given current pricing; adding even a 2 GB variant of the Pi 5 to the setup almost doubles the total cost of the screen. Beyond the wallet, there is the thermal cost. The Register notes that the Pi 5 can generate significant heat under load, which could lead to cooling issues when mounted directly to the back of the display.

Even the setup process isn't seamless. The Register reports that the unit did not work initially until they performed a sudo rpi-eeprom-update -a to bring the Pi 5 firmware up to February 2026 or later.

While the display is described as bright and crisp, the 'more pixels' justification feels like a convenient excuse to push users toward more expensive, newer hardware. As The Register notes, while the OS provides the necessary drivers for ten-finger touch, it is a stretch to call the software optimized for touch. If you're looking for a seamless tablet experience, you won't find it here—just a more expensive bill for the privilege of a few extra pixels.
