Elon Musk's company is aggressively acquiring spectrum to build a mobile network and compete with established carriers.
SpaceX is positioning itself to become the fourth major mobile carrier in the United States, as first reported by The Verge. The company is pursuing an ambitious plan to build what it describes as the world's most advanced mobile network, directly challenging the market dominance of T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T.
To fuel this expansion, SpaceX has engaged in significant spectrum acquisitions. Walter Piecyk, a partner and analyst at LightShed Partners, told The Verge that SpaceX recently purchased 800 MHz spectrum for $8 billion. This spectrum was originally associated with Nextel and was later held by Grain Management after Sprint was required to divest it during its sale to T-Mobile. Additionally, SpaceX previously spent nearly $20 billion on separate EchoStar spectrum.
Beyond spectrum purchases, the FCC has approved the deployment of 15,000 next-generation Starlink satellites. Piecyk notes that while satellite companies typically do not pay for spectrum, SpaceX shifted its strategy after receiving positive investor feedback regarding the potential of the U.S. telecom market, which he describes as a trillion-dollar enterprise value business.
