Siri AI: The Gilded Cage of iOS 27
Apple pushes a massive AI overhaul to lock users in, while connectivity fixes remain a secondary thought.
Apple has officially rolled out iOS 27, alongside macOS 27 (Golden Gate), iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27. As reported by Engadget and The Verge, the center-piece is "Siri AI," a long-delayed revamp of the virtual assistant capable of using on-screen context and personal app data.
From my perspective, this is a classic ecosystem play. By weaving Siri AI across every device—from the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 to the MacBook Neo and the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro—Apple is tightening the grip on its users. The "innovation" here is a lure; once your personal data is fully integrated into this AI layer, leaving the ecosystem becomes a logistical nightmare.
While Apple touts these AI capabilities, the actual connectivity improvements feel like afterthoughts. The Verge notes that iPad users get "smoother connectivity" between mobile data and Wi-Fi, and Vision Pro users see general Wi-Fi connectivity improvements. These are basic functional needs, yet they are buried under new AI photo editing tools and "Liquid Glass" UI opacity sliders.
Furthermore, the accessibility of this "innovation" is fragmented. Engadget reports that Siri AI is currently English-only, with other languages arriving in October, and is entirely unavailable in China and the European Union due to regulatory hurdles. The Verge further notes that Siri AI is available as a beta today for English-only devices. Even for those in supported regions, the hardware wall is steep: Siri AI requires Apple Intelligence, limiting it to iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later. Apple is essentially using a software update to signal that if you want the "future," you need to buy the newest hardware.
