Patriots Owner Robert Kraft Offers Record-Breaking Deal to Christian Gonzalez

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft announced Saturday at the start of training camp that the team has offered cornerback Christian Gonzalez a contract that would make him the highest-paid player at the position in the NFL, according to CBS Sports.

While Kraft did not provide specific financial details, the offer presumably targets the average yearly salary. This comes as the cornerback market continues to climb. Denzel Ward recently became the league's highest-paid defensive back via a two-year, $62.2 million extension with the Cleveland Browns, averaging $31.1 million per year. Prior to that, Trent McDuffie held the distinction with a four-year, $124 million extension averaging $31 million per year following a trade to the Los Angeles Rams.

Gonzalez, a 2023 first-round pick and 2025 Pro Bowler, has taken a more reserved approach than the Patriots' leadership. Speaking to the media Tuesday, Gonzalez stated he prefers to keep contract discussions private. Despite the ongoing negotiations, Gonzalez has been a full participant in the first four training camp practices, avoiding the $45,000 per-day fine associated with holding out.

CBS Sports notes that for Gonzalez to surpass Sauce Gardner's current benchmarks, the Patriots would likely need to offer at least $124,924,482 in new money. A potential hurdle in the negotiations could be New England's recent preference for per-game roster bonuses, a structure used in defensive tackle Milton Williams' four-year, $104 million deal to provide the team financial relief during player injuries.
