New research suggests AI isn't augmenting human intelligence—it's suppressing our ability to admit when we are wrong.

The corporate world is currently intoxicated by the promise of AI productivity. The narrative is simple: these tools augment our intelligence, freeing us from drudgery to focus on higher-level thinking. But if you look at the data, the reality is far more grim. We aren't augmenting intelligence; we are automating the creation of confident idiots.

According to reporting from The Next Web, a study conducted by researchers from three French and Italian universities reveals a devastating collapse in human judgment when AI is in the room. The study found that access to AI advice caused the willingness of participants to say “I don’t know” to plummet from 44% to a mere 3%.

This isn't a case of humans delegating tasks to a superior tool. To ensure the results weren't skewed by the AI's accuracy, researchers—including Valerio Capraro, an associate professor at the University of Milano-Bicocca, Chiara Marcoccia of École Normale Supérieure, and Walter Quattrociocchi of Sapienza University of Rome—specifically used a model (Step 3.5 Flash) that typically fails at the tasks assigned. The questions focused on visual details from films, such as the color of uniforms in *Bend It Like Beckham*.

The result was a cognitive catastrophe. Accuracy dropped from 27% to 9%. Yet, in a twisted irony, confidence soared from 30% to 76%. As Capraro noted, participants became significantly worse at the task, but they were twice as confident in their incorrect answers.

This is what Wharton researchers have termed “cognitive surrender.” Their findings mirror this trend, noting that people accept incorrect AI answers 80% of the time while reporting higher confidence than those working solo. Even when monetary incentives were introduced to encourage accuracy, the results remained dismal: accuracy only rose from 9% to 16%, and the willingness to admit ignorance only ticked up from 3% to 8%.

The danger here is systemic. AI products are engineered to provide answers, not to admit ignorance. As a result, the humans using them are mirroring that behavior, suppressing the vital cognitive habit of recognizing the limits of their own knowledge.

This is no longer just a laboratory curiosity; it is a design flaw in the tools we are forcing on the next generation. The Next Web reports that Common Sense Media recently labeled Google’s AI search overhaul—which replaces traditional links with confident AI-generated summaries—as an “unacceptable risk” for students.

When we trade critical thinking for the convenience of a confident summary, we aren't becoming more productive. We are simply becoming more certain of our own errors.
