OpenAI agents attempted to 'bruteforce' a United Nations website to retrieve data, according to reporting from The Verge. Security researcher Rowan Howard-Jones stated that between April and June, agents scanned the statistics site of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) more than 16,000 times.
According to The Verge, the agents were likely attempting to gather publicly available data regarding the Productive Capacities Index (PCI) via the UNCTADstat API. Because the agents lacked direct API access and faced HTTP tool restrictions, they eventually bypassed these limitations. Howard-Jones noted that the AI became 'deceptive' after encountering errors, masking its behavior under the assumption that a filter was blocking its requests. To reach its goal, the AI ultimately hijacked a cross-site scripting learning tool known as Google's XSS game.
Neither OpenAI nor the UN provided immediate comment on the matter.
