The streaming giant is closing Night School Studio and Moonloot Games as it moves away from prestige indie titles toward a living room-centric strategy.
Netflix is shutting down two of its game development studios, Night School Studio and Moonloot Games, as the company shifts its focus toward party games and titles designed for TV streaming, as The Verge first reported.
Night School Studio, which Netflix acquired in 2021 and is known for the *Oxenfree* series, recently released a TV-based horror experience titled *Unhinged* and a *Black Mirror* mobile game in 2025. Moonloot Games, based in Helsinki, was established in 2022.
This move marks a departure from a previous mobile-centric strategy that emphasized prestige indie titles. Netflix spokesperson Chrissy Kelleher told The Verge that the company is making organizational changes to better execute its current priorities, which are divided into four pillars: party, kids, narrative, and "mainstream" games.
Beyond the studio closures, Kelleher confirmed that Netflix is eliminating "some" additional roles within its gaming division. Among those cut is Tara Voelker, who identified herself as the sole accessibility specialist on the gaming team.
These cuts follow a series of recent contractions in Netflix's gaming ambitions. The Verge reports that in 2024, the company closed a AAA studio that failed to release a game. Last year, Netflix shut down the studio responsible for a *Squid Game* mobile title and sold Spry Fox, the studio behind *Cozy Grove*, back to its original owners.
