New releases from Moonshot AI and Alibaba are putting pressure on US frontier labs as open-weight models gain traction in agentic tasks.
Chinese AI labs are aggressively pursuing an open-source strategy, releasing models that rival the performance of restricted Western systems. According to Wired, recent releases include Alibaba's Qwen 3.8, Z.ai's GLM 5.2, and Moonshot AI's Kimi K3.
Moonshot AI's K3 has drawn significant attention for its capabilities in agentic coding and web development. Arena AI ranks K3 as the top model for web development and fourth for agentic tasks, trailing only OpenAI's GPT 5.6 and Anthropic's Fable and Opus 4.8. Additionally, Artificial Analysis places K3 third in its intelligence index. The demand for K3 was so high following its July 16 preview that Moonshot AI temporarily restricted new sign-ups due to inference computing resource constraints.
This open-weight approach contrasts with a trend of increasing restriction among US firms. Wired reports that OpenAI delayed the release of GPT 5.6 following a White House request, and Anthropic temporarily took its Fable 5 and Mythos models offline due to broad export controls issued by the White House.
The shift has triggered reactions from US officials. Commerce Secretary Scott Bessent suggested the possibility of sanctions on Chinese AI firms, and Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, alleged that Moonshot AI distilled Anthropic's Fable to develop K3, calling the move a theft of proprietary technology. Venture capitalist David Sacks also described the performance of Moonshot's model as "concerning."
