The tech giant's first foldable omits key Pro hardware and software tools, positioning the device as a consumption tool rather than a creative powerhouse.

Apple has launched the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone, but the device arrives with significant hardware and software omissions compared to the simultaneously released iPhone 18 Pro. According to reporting from Engadget, the Duo lacks several hallmark premium features, including the FaceID facial recognition array and the Camera Control button.

Authentication on the Duo is limited to passwords or a fingerprint sensor located in the power button. The device also sees a notable downgrade in imaging capabilities. While it retains the 48-megapixel wide and ultrawide lenses found in other models, Engadget reports the Duo lacks the iPhone 18 Pro's periscope telephoto lens, LiDAR scanner, and mechanical aperture. Additionally, the Duo's cover display features a 12-megapixel selfie camera, falling short of the 18-megapixel sensor on the 18 Pro.

Apple has further segmented the user experience through software restrictions. Engadget notes that the Duo lacks "Pro Controls" for adjusting aperture and shutter speed, as well as support for ProRAW shots and spatial photo and video. The device also omits true multi-window multitasking.

These strategic cuts suggest a clear division in Apple's product tiering. By removing creative tools and high-end optics, Apple is positioning the Duo as a media consumption device, while reserving professional-grade functionality for the iPhone 18 Pro.
