New Stanford research reveals a widening employment gap for young workers in AI-exposed fields, signaling a shift in how the workforce is recruited.
Artificial intelligence is disproportionately impacting the start of the professional lifecycle, according to research from Stanford University economists first reported by Ars Technica. In an updated August 2026 paper titled “Canaries in the Coal Mine? Six Facts about the Recent Employment Effects of Artificial Intelligence,” researchers found that employment for workers aged 22 to 25 in the most “AI-exposed” occupations is now 19 percent lower than for their peers in less exposed fields.

The study utilized high-frequency payroll data from HR management company ADP and analyzed exposure using the Anthropic Economic Index and a previous labor market impact gauge. The findings indicate that while overall economy-wide employment remains relatively stable, the entry-level market is fracturing. Since 2022, employment for young workers in the top 40 percent of AI-impacted jobs fell by approximately 11 percent, while employment for the same age group in the least impacted 60 percent of jobs grew by 10 percent.
Crucially, the data suggests this is a hiring crisis rather than a firing trend. The researchers found that the decline is driven by lower hiring rates for entry-level roles rather than increased quits or layoffs. The impact is most severe in roles where AI is used for “automative” tasks—those that fully replace human work—such as receptionists, information clerks, accountants, and auditors. Conversely, roles where AI is “augmentative,” such as registered nurses or chief executives, show more stable employment trends. The researchers theorize that workers are most vulnerable in roles requiring “codified” knowledge, which is standardized information that can be taught via textbooks or written procedures.
