The chip giant is investing heavily in the Trump administration's Genesis Mission as it deploys seven new AI-optimized supercomputers across federal laboratories.

Nvidia has committed $1 billion over the next five years to fund U.S. scientific discovery, according to reporting from The Register. Announced during a Washington, DC event, the investment targets research and development in energy security, healthcare, and quantum computing. The funding represents approximately 1/60th of the company's quarterly profits.

This move aligns Nvidia with the Genesis Mission, a Trump administration initiative designed to maintain U.S. technological leadership through AI-driven discovery. The commitment marks a significant return to large-scale U.S. supercomputing for Nvidia. While the company previously provided the Summit and Sierra systems in 2018 and the Perlmutter system in 2021, recent government contracts have been dominated by AMD-based platforms such as El Capitan and Frontier.

Nvidia is now scaling its government presence by supplying at least seven new supercomputers to the Lawrence Berkeley, Los Alamos, and Argonne National Laboratories. This includes the Blackwell-GPU-based Solstice system at Argonne, developed with Oracle, which is optimized for AI workloads. Additionally, the Mission and Vision systems at Los Alamos will utilize Nvidia's Quantum-X800 InfiniBand and the Vera Rubin platform.

Despite these gains, Nvidia has not fully displaced its rivals in the high-precision sector. The Register reports that the Department of Energy's largest supercomputer for pure FP64, the Discovery system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will be powered by AMD's Venice CPUs and MI430X GPUs. Built by HPE's Cray division, Discovery is expected to launch in 2029.
