The venture firm closed a new oversubscribed vehicle within weeks, though more than half of its previous India fund remains undeployed.

Accel has closed a new $550 million India-focused fund as part of a larger $3.5 billion global fundraising effort, according to TechCrunch. The new vehicle was oversubscribed and closed within weeks, arriving less than two years after the firm raised its previous India fund.

However, the fundraising push comes while Accel is sitting on a significant amount of undeployed capital. TechCrunch reports that more than 55% of the firm's previous $650 million India fund is still available for investment, according to people familiar with the matter.

Accel partner Shekhar Kirani told TechCrunch that the firm expects to begin deploying capital from the new fund in 2027, and will continue to invest from the previous fund until that time. Kirani declined to disclose the exact amount remaining in the earlier vehicle.

Accel is betting on a new wave of Indian startups driven by fintech, consumer internet, advanced manufacturing, and AI. Partners Prayank Swaroop and Shekhar Kirani told TechCrunch the firm is focusing on the AI application layer and enterprise software rather than competing with foundation model companies like Anthropic or OpenAI. Kirani cited RapidClaims, an Accel-backed startup automating medical coding for U.S. healthcare providers, as an example of this strategy.

The raise occurs as other global firms increase their India commitments. TechCrunch reports that Peak XV Partners recently raised $1.3 billion across new funds, General Catalyst has committed $5 billion over five years, and Lightspeed Venture Partners is reportedly exploring a $300 million to $350 million India fund.
