Alexander Zverev captured his first US Open title on Sunday, defeating American Ben Shelton in a four-set final that ended 6-3, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2, according to reporting from The Guardian.
Zverev, the tournament's No. 1 seed, secured his second grand slam victory of the year. The Guardian reports that Zverev joins Jannik Sinner, Guillermo Vilas, and Jimmy Connors as the only men in the open era to win two grand slam titles in a single campaign. The victory comes as Zverev continues to remain a popular figure at major tournaments, despite past allegations of physical abuse from former partners Brenda Patea and Olya Sharypova—claims Zverev has denied.
For Shelton, the 23-year-old reached a new career-high ranking of No. 4 and won his second Masters 1000 title this summer at the Canadian Open. However, he fell short of becoming the first American man to win the US Open since Andy Roddick in 2003, and the first Black American man to do so since Arthur Ashe in 1968.
