Bloomy, a startup backed by Y Combinator (S26), has launched an AI-powered mastery learning platform designed for K-12 students. Founded by former Teach For America educator Alex Southmayd, the company aims to address the "Bloom 2-sigma problem," which posits that one-on-one tutoring significantly improves student outcomes compared to traditional classroom instruction.

According to reporting from Hacker News, Bloomy provides adaptive curricula in Writing, English Language Arts, and Math. The platform utilizes a structured loop of diagnosis, instruction, practice, feedback, and independent mastery. Students progress through a three-stage process: "Base Camp" for concepts, "Climb" for guided practice, and "Summit" for independent mastery assessments. Students must achieve at least 90% mastery on the Summit assessment to advance.

Central to the product is BloomyBot, a Socratic AI tutor powered by models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Southmayd notes that BloomyBot is designed to scaffold learning rather than provide direct answers, acting as an interactive tutor that is restricted to current lessons and disabled during mastery assessments. The platform's knowledge graph of skill prerequisites was developed in collaboration with the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative / Learning Commons.

Bloomy is currently deployed across various educational environments, including traditional school districts, charter schools, homeschools, hybrid schools, and microschools. Southmayd highlighted an early pilot at a Massachusetts charter school serving approximately 150 students in grades 6 through 8.
