A woman joins a lawsuit against Elon Musk's AI company, alleging the chatbot was used to generate thousands of explicit images from a childhood photo.
xAI, now part of SpaceX, is facing expanded legal pressure over the safety guardrails of its Grok chatbot. As TechCrunch first reported, a woman identified as Jane Doe 4 has joined a legal action that was initially brought by three teenagers from Tennessee.
Reporting from The Washington Post, cited by TechCrunch, indicates that Jane Doe 4 alleges her stepfather used Grok to manipulate a photo of her from when she was 11 years old, resulting in the creation of more than 7,000 explicit images. The woman stated that the tool is turning everyday life into child sexual abuse. TechCrunch reports that the woman's stepfather was found dead by suicide two days after law enforcement uncovered the images during a raid.
The original plaintiffs, the three Tennessee teenagers, accuse xAI of failing to implement basic precautions to stop Grok from generating explicit images of real people, specifically minors. TechCrunch notes that X was flooded with millions of sexualized images generated by Grok earlier this year. The plaintiffs are currently seeking class action status for the suit.
TechCrunch stated they have reached out to xAI for comment.
