Volvo Integrates Gemini AI into Refreshed XC40

Volvo has announced a major refresh for the XC40, bringing back the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version alongside a significant injection of new software and hardware. According to reporting from The Verge, the updated XC40 will arrive at dealerships early next year featuring a gut-renovated interior and a larger 11.2-inch high-resolution infotainment screen.

Central to the interior update is the integration of Google's Gemini AI as the voice assistant. Engadget reports that Gemini functions as an agentic instance capable of managing vehicle settings and the infotainment experience. Beyond basic commands, the AI can provide summaries of restaurant menus—such as vegetarian or gluten-free options—and suggest scenic route detours. The Verge notes that the AI is designed to help users plan routes, find specific locations, and manage messages.

This shift toward AI-driven utility is paired with a comprehensive safety overhaul. The Verge reports a new sensor-and-software platform featuring 12 new ultrasonic sensors, new front and corner radars, and a new front camera to enable real-time collision avoidance and automated emergency steering. Engadget adds that these upgrades support an automated lane-change feature within the Pilot Assist system, managed by a central safety controller with increased processing power that is over-the-air updatable.

While the electric EX40 will be updated internationally, Engadget reports that the U.S. market will not receive the updated battery-electric version, instead receiving the refreshed XC40 in B5 trim, featuring a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and a small electric motor. Akhil Krishnan, Interim Lead for the 30 and 40 Series at Volvo Cars, stated that these enhancements create the "best version of the XC40 yet."
