UMG and ElevenLabs Partner to Launch Licensed AI Music Platform

Universal Music Group (UMG) has entered into a multi-year licensing agreement and strategic collaboration with ElevenLabs to develop a new AI-powered creation platform. According to reporting from Engadget and The Verge, the unnamed software will allow music fans to create mashups, remixes, and new interpretations of tracks using licensed music from UMG artists who opt into the program.
ElevenLabs CEO Mati Staniszewski stated in a press release that the partnership combines UMG's rights management and global community with ElevenLabs' AI models to create fan experiences while ensuring artists and songwriters are "fairly compensated." The platform will be distinct from ElevenLabs' existing ElevenMusic generator and Music API. Beyond the creation platform, the two companies plan to develop further AI audio products and fan experiences.
This move comes amid a volatile period for intellectual property in the AI era. Engadget notes that UMG previously joined a coalition of labels calling for a ban on "slop tracks" from global charts, while other labels have engaged in copyright infringement lawsuits against companies like Udio and Suno. Some of these conflicts have already transitioned into licensing deals; The Verge reports that UMG is currently developing a platform with Udio and has established AI licensing agreements with Klay, Nvidia, and Spotify. Additionally, Suno recently launched v6 AI music models trained on licensed songs from BMG, Warner Music Group, and other partners.
