The physical electrical grid has become the primary bottleneck for deployment, and a new coalition of tech giants is essentially admitting that the current utility model cannot keep pace with the industry's hunger for power.

According to reporting from Engadget and TechCrunch, NVIDIA, Google, and Anthropic have partnered with grid software startup Emerald AI to launch the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA). The coalition also includes utilities AES, Constellation, National Grid, and NRG Energy. The goal is to accelerate the connection of data centers to the grid by transforming these facilities from "inflexible loads" into "controllable resources."

As Engadget reports, NVIDIA notes that U.S. power infrastructure was designed for "flat, static electricity demand," not the dynamic needs of computing centers. This mismatch has led to a crisis of availability; Emerald AI CEO Varun Sivaram told Fortune (via Engadget) that new U.S. data centers can face wait times of a decade or more for grid connections. This happens because utilities must ensure capacity for peak demand, such as sweltering afternoons when air conditioning is at its maximum.

To solve this, AEMA is pushing a "demand response" model. TechCrunch explains that this paradigm allows data centers to temporarily reduce electricity use during peak hours. By pausing noncritical tasks, shifting compute loads to other facilities, or using on-site generation and batteries, the coalition claims they could unlock 100GW of capacity on the existing grid. A separate Goldman Sachs study cited by TechCrunch suggests that limiting max grid usage to 90% for a few hours could free up 76GW.

Emerald AI, which recently raised $150 million in a Series A led by DCVC and Energize Capital, provides software that connects utilities directly to data centers to coordinate these shifts. This is presented as a cleaner alternative to the traditional method of using diesel generators to handle peak loads.

However, the coalition's motives extend beyond technical efficiency. Engadget reports that AEMA will act as a lobbying arm in Washington and state capitals, pressing regulators and governors to grant faster, larger grid connections to facilities that commit to this flexibility. Engadget further notes that the alliance does not address the noise, community disturbance, or the massive pollution resulting from AI energy demands, suggesting the move is partly a response to public and political backlash.

Even with these optimizations, the physical limits of the grid remain. Ayse Coskun, chief scientist at Emerald AI, told TechCrunch that while the technology can blunt the need for new generating sources, it cannot eliminate that need entirely.
