The Odyssey G8 G80HS offers extreme sharpness, but current hardware may struggle to keep pace with its pixel count.

Samsung has entered the high-resolution gaming market with the Odyssey G8 G80HS, a 32-inch monitor featuring a resolution of 6144 x 3456, as Wired first reported. According to Wired, this 6K display offers a roughly 155 percent increase in pixels over standard 4K, which effectively eliminates jagged aliasing on fine objects in games.

However, Wired reports that the hardware required to drive this resolution is a significant hurdle. While the monitor supports a 165-Hz refresh rate at 6K, achieving this requires HDMI 2.1 or DisplayPort 2.1 outputs. Even with the necessary ports, rendering modern 3D titles at 6K is demanding. Wired notes that even high-end GPUs, such as the Nvidia RTX 5090 and the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, may struggle to maintain playable frame rates in demanding, path-traced titles like Halo Campaign Evolved or Alan Wake 2.

Beyond raw processing power, Wired highlights a trade-off in display technology. The G80HS utilizes an IPS-LCD panel with a maximum measured contrast ratio of approximately 2,000:1. Wired argues this appears flat compared to OLED alternatives, which can reach contrast ratios of 1,000,000:1 or higher. The monitor is currently priced between $1,300 and $1,600 at retailers including Amazon and Samsung.
