Pistons Lock Up Jalen Duren With $200 Million Extension
After a prolonged standoff, the All-Star center agrees to a five-year deal to remain in Detroit.
The Detroit Pistons have secured center Jalen Duren on a five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed contract, according to reporting from ESPN's Shams Charania. The agreement ended a tense standoff that lasted until just over an hour before the NBA's Oct. 1 deadline.
Duren, 22, faced a choice between the long-term offer and a $9.6 million qualifying offer that would have made him an unrestricted free agent next summer. While sign-and-trade rumors linked Duren to the Sacramento Kings and Milwaukee Bucks, Sports Illustrated reported that Detroit refused to engage in those discussions. Pistons President of Basketball Operations Trajan Langdon maintained a firm stance during the negotiations, stating at a team media day that he would not let professional decisions be hindered by feelings.
The investment follows a breakout 2025-26 regular season where Duren averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game, earning All-Star and third-team All-NBA honors. He served as a primary scoring option alongside superstar Cade Cunningham, helping lead the Pistons to 60 wins and what Sports Illustrated described as the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. However, Duren struggled in the postseason, averaging 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds over 14 games before the Pistons were eliminated by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round.
By securing Duren and Ausar Thompson with multi-year extensions, Langdon has finalized a core intended to compete for the franchise's first championship since 2004.
