The startup aims for full-scale production by 2029, but current deployments remain in the testing and planning phases.

As AI demand drives an urgent search for cost-effective power, Petra Power is positioning its solid oxide fuel cells as a solution for data centers and defense vehicles. According to TechCrunch, these ceramic devices convert fuels like natural gas into electricity without combustion, a process founder Aaron Goodman describes as stripping electrons directly from the fuel to eliminate the efficiency losses associated with traditional power generation.

While Goodman highlights the technology's compact footprint and lower emissions, the company's path to deployment is still in the early stages. TechCrunch reports that Petra is currently targeting neoclouds and infrastructure providers, with a goal for first deployment by 2028 and full-scale production by 2029. Goodman noted that while hyperscalers are an ideal customer profile, the company has no firm agreements with them yet.

Beyond data centers, Petra is pursuing the government sector to provide auxiliary power for land vehicles. Goodman clarified to TechCrunch that the product has not yet been deployed on a live vehicle and remains in a testing phase. To date, the 15-person team has secured nearly $9 million in contracts from the Defense Department.
