Opinion: Beyond the 'Bought This' Cliché: The Shift Toward Intent-Aware Commerce

As predictive AI moves from static history to real-time taste-mapping, merchants face a critical pivot in how they fight for customer lifetime value.
For years, e-commerce personalization has been stuck in a loop of basic behavioral echoes. Most storefronts rely on demographic segments or historical purchase data, meaning a first-time visitor sees a generic page and a returning customer is chased by products they have already bought. In my view, this is where the LTV war is won or lost; merchants who continue to rely on these static profiles are ignoring the actual intent of the shopper in the moment.
As TechCrunch first reported, a new startup called Malachyte is attempting to solve this by applying the logic of high-scale recommendation engines to retail. Founded by former Spotify employees Sidd Motwani, Ian Anderson, and Shivaditya Sinha, the company is leveraging "two-headed Vector AI" to move past historical data and toward real-time intent prediction. Motwani, who serves as CEO, told TechCrunch that the system is designed to build a profile of a user's preferences and goals starting before the first click, using available context the moment a page loads.
The distinction here is critical for operators: instead of aggregating data into segments overnight, Malachyte's system reads signals—such as hovers, scrolls, and search refinements—continuously. Motwani provided the example of a user searching for "heavy-duty boot" and clicking steel-toed options; the system can immediately prioritize work pants and gloves while deprioritizing dress shoes, regardless of whether the user has an account or prior history. Furthermore, Motwani noted to TechCrunch that contextual signals, such as the difference between a mobile visitor at 11 p.m. and a laptop user in the morning, remain largely underutilized by current systems.
Malachyte has been testing this technology since 2024 with over 20 enterprise customers in the grocery, travel, and retail sectors. The platform launched with Fun.com in the fall of 2025 and has been available to Shopify merchants via native integration since June 2026, with API options for larger retailers. Motwani believes the ultimate goal is to unify marketing and merchandising under this single understanding of customer behavior.
To scale this vision, Malachyte announced Thursday that it has raised $10 million in seed funding. Bessemer Venture Partners and Gradient co-led the round, which also included participation from Harpoon Ventures. The funds are earmarked for hiring product and commercial leaders and scaling distribution.
