During a Dev Day conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, CEO Sam Altman introduced "Space," a shared workspace within ChatGPT. According to TechCrunch, Space allows coworkers to collaborate with the chatbot and "Dots"—OpenAI's new AI agent personas capable of performing tasks for users.
Altman compared the functionality of Space to a drive, noting that pages and files coexist there and that users can assign specific instructions to pages, such as monitoring team channels for updates. As part of this push, OpenAI launched "Pages," a word processor designed for collaboration between humans and agents that allows users to research, write, generate images, and create charts. TechCrunch reports that Pages serves as a direct competitor to Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
Additionally, OpenAI introduced collaborative slides, which users can generate through conversation within ChatGPT. These slides support editing and commenting by both human workers and AI agents.
While OpenAI moves into the productivity space, TechCrunch notes that Microsoft and Salesforce are simultaneously attempting to integrate AI capabilities into their own offerings as the software industry adapts to the evolving landscape.
