The introduction of interactive, custom visual elements marks a shift away from text-heavy LLM outputs toward a more multimodal experience.

OpenAI is updating ChatGPT for its user base of over a billion people with a new "Intelligent UI" designed to replace walls of text with interactive, visual elements. According to reporting from Wired, the update leverages the GPT-6 model and is rolling out to paid users today and free users tomorrow.

Rather than relying solely on text and static images, the Intelligent UI generates custom tools tailored to specific prompts. Wired's Reece Rogers Gear tested the interface, noting the ability to generate an anatomy-focused slug diagram with clickable buttons, an airplane seat explorer for comparing Alaska and Delta cabin layouts, and a San Francisco apartment affordability calculator featuring movable sliders.

OpenAI product manager Aarush Selvan told Wired that the company's design team focused on balancing the addition of charts, diagrams, and buttons with the need to avoid cluttered interfaces. Users also maintain the ability to request fewer visual outputs if preferred.

This shift toward generative user interfaces mirrors a similar move by Google, which Wired reports announced "generative UI" for Search earlier this year, capable of producing adjustable graphics for complex topics like black holes. As AI begins to dictate software aesthetics and generate custom software on the fly, Wired suggests this transition into a multimodal era may create an identity crisis for professional designers.
