The company aims to launch a system by 2025 allowing creators to specify how their works are used in AI training.

OpenAI is developing a new tool called Media Manager designed to allow creators and content owners to identify their copyrighted text, audio, images, and video across various sources. According to OpenAI, the tool will enable owners to specify whether their works should be included or excluded from machine learning research and training.

OpenAI reports that the tool is intended to provide a more scalable and efficient solution than the robots.txt standard or web crawler permissions, noting that many creators do not control the websites where their content appears. The company stated its goal is to have Media Manager in place by 2025 and hopes the tool will establish an industry standard.

While OpenAI maintains that legal precedents make AI learning "fair use," the company stated it wants to contribute to a "social contract" for content. This effort coincides with existing partnerships to display content within ChatGPT, including deals with Axel Springer, Prisa Media, Le Monde, and the Financial Times. OpenAI noted that content from these partners may also be used to train ChatGPT to improve newsroom tools and better surface relevant publisher content for users.
