Ukrainian military intelligence has identified an Nvidia AI chip within the wreckage of a Russian S-71 Monochrome cruise missile, as The Register first reported. The Defense Ministry’s Intelligence Directorate (GUR) stated that the recovered component is a Jetson Orin NX 16GB unit, identified by the stamp TE980M-A1.
The S-71M is an air-launched weapon capable of autonomous target engagement using optical sensors and onboard computing. GUR noted that the presence of the Nvidia module suggests the missile utilizes artificial intelligence technologies to operate either autonomously or with user oversight.
Nvidia ceased direct business operations in Russia in 2022, and the specific chip found was released in early 2023, meaning it reached Russia through indirect channels. In a statement to The Register, an Nvidia spokesperson clarified that Orin modules are consumer-grade hardware not intended for military use and are not supposed to be available in Russia. The spokesperson added that pre-owned units are available via various reseller channels and that the company takes action if customers violate U.S. export controls.
GUR argues that the discovery, along with documented Chinese-made electronics in Russian weaponry, proves that current export control regimes and sanctions are failing. The intelligence agency called for increased sanctions pressure and better global coordination to prevent foreign silicon from entering Moscow's weapons systems.
