Analysis of FEC filings shows Elon Musk's political operation shifting focus toward key Senate races to block Democratic control.

Elon Musk's America PAC is aggressively targeting the 2026 midterm elections, focusing heavily on seven key U.S. Senate contests, as WIRED first reported. According to a WIRED analysis of Federal Election Commission (FEC) data, the super PAC has spent $26.7 million so far this year, with $21 million of that directed at these specific races.

WIRED reports that the spending is heavily skewed toward negative campaigning. For every dollar spent supporting a Republican, America PAC spent more than two opposing a Democrat; in Senate races, that ratio rose to three. In Texas, where Musk resides and operates Tesla and SpaceX, the PAC spent over $7.6 million opposing Democrat James Talarico and $1.1 million backing Republican Ken Paxton. Other targeted races include Ohio, where the PAC spent double the amount attacking Sherrod Brown compared to defending Jon Husted, and Iowa, where spending to attack Josh Turek was 14 times higher than support for Ashley Hinson.

The strategic shift comes as Republicans face the possibility of losing the Senate majority. WIRED notes that a Democratic-controlled chamber could lead to congressional investigations into Musk and the passage of bills regulating AI and tech—sectors central to Musk's business interests.

While America PAC's spending is lower than in 2024, Musk has remained active. WIRED reports he personally donated $40 million to other Republican groups between June 2025 and May 2026. Since late August, America PAC has injected $11.2 million into the Texas race and roughly $5 million each into Ohio and Michigan Senate contests.
