Model Projections Clash With Market Perception for Week 1

As fantasy managers finalize Week 1 lineups, the gap between historical performance and projected volume is creating stark divergences in player valuation. According to reporting from CBS Sports, a computer model from SportsLine—which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times—has produced rankings that deviate sharply from traditional expectations.

One primary example is Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. Despite finishing first or second in positional points for the last six seasons and leading all players in fantasy points a year ago, the model has placed the 2024 MVP outside the top 15 for Week 1. CBS Sports reports this projection is driven by a difficult matchup against Houston, a team that sacked Allen eight times in their last meeting and against whom Allen has never recorded a rushing touchdown in four regular season starts. Additionally, Allen has recorded 10 turnovers across his previous three Week 1 road starts.

Conversely, the model is projecting a surge for Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey. While McConkey regressed from the WR12 in 2024 to the WR30 last season, the model slots him as a top 10 fantasy wideout for Week 1, ranking him above CeeDee Lamb and Justin Jefferson. CBS Sports notes this projection is based on reduced target competition following the departure of Keenan Allen, as well as offensive upgrades including the addition of offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel and improved offensive line health. McConkey's opening matchup is against an Arizona unit that finished last year ranked 27th in total defense and 29th in scoring defense.
