Xbox is leveraging Rockstar Games' latest title to drive a new pay-as-you-go monetization model and expand its hardware reach.
Microsoft has secured exclusive streaming rights for *Grand Theft Auto VI*, according to reporting from The Verge. The deal ensures that Xbox Cloud Gaming will be the only platform capable of streaming the title at launch, though the duration of the agreement remains unspecified.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma informed employees during a company all-hands meeting that Microsoft is pursuing a strategy with *Grand Theft Auto VI* that distinguishes it from any other platform holder. Because Rockstar Games has not yet announced a PC version of the game, the streaming exclusivity allows Microsoft to target PC users who lack an Xbox Series X/S or PS5 console.
This move coincides with a significant shift in how Microsoft monetizes its cloud services. Starting in November—the same month *Grand Theft Auto VI* releases—Microsoft is introducing a pay-as-you-go option for Xbox Cloud Gaming, removing the requirement for a Game Pass subscription. Simultaneously, Microsoft is implementing streaming hour caps for existing tiers: 15 hours for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, 10 hours for Premium, and five hours for Game Pass Essential.
Beyond the software, Sharma detailed that the next generation of Xbox hardware, dubbed "Project Helix," will consist of a "family of devices." This follows a strategic multi-year partnership announced last year between Microsoft and AMD to develop a portfolio of devices, including the next-generation console.
