The social media giant is rolling out new LLM-driven tools to block ads that secretly direct users to illegal child abuse material.

Meta is intensifying its efforts to scrub illegal content from its advertising networks, announcing the rollout of new AI tools designed to detect ads and accounts that secretly lead users to child sexual abuse material, as TechCrunch first reported. The company is implementing a new large language model (LLM) system to identify "signposting," a tactic where ads appear harmless but act as gateways to illegal content hosted outside of Meta's platforms.

Rather than focusing solely on the content of the ad, Meta is now analyzing the destination where ads send users. This allows the company to block violating websites and the accounts associated with them. Meta is also deploying a "red-teaming AI agent" to probe its own safety measures for weaknesses and enhancing systems to prevent banned users from returning via new accounts.

These technical pivots follow significant legal and regulatory pressure. TechCrunch reports that in August, Meta agreed to pay up to $18 billion to settle a child safety lawsuit involving 29 U.S. states. The company has also faced criticism from lawmakers regarding the risks its services pose to young users.

Meta's internal data highlights the scale of the issue: the company took action against 33.2 million instances of child sexual exploitation content across Facebook and Instagram in the first half of 2026. In India, Meta acted on 5.3 million such pieces of content in the same period. Meta stated that more than 97% of the content it acted on globally was detected by its own systems before any user reports were filed.
