The move targets TikTok's US growth engine and cross-platform discovery by blocking ads from ByteDance and third-party partners.

Meta has implemented a comprehensive ban on advertisements and marketing from ByteDance, TikTok's US minority owner, as Engadget first reported. According to reporting from Bloomberg, the restriction is active in the United States, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Beyond direct ads from ByteDance, Meta is also blocking third-party advertisers who run campaigns linked to TikTok within those specific regions. Meta spokesperson Chris Sgro told Bloomberg that the company is not obligated to run advertisements from a competitor whose objective is to migrate users away from Meta's own applications, describing the decision as a "normal business practice."

This escalation follows a series of tit-for-tat maneuvers, including TikTok's decision to ban links to Facebook and Instagram profiles. The conflict coincides with broader pressures regarding child safety. Engadget reports that Meta recently reached an $18 billion settlement with US states to implement safety features for minors on Instagram and Facebook. Meta has since used newspaper advertisements to demand that rivals adopt similar standards, while criticizing TikTok for its absence from US government meetings concerning screen time.

TikTok, which is currently owned by a consortium of investors from the US and UAE, including Oracle founder Larry Ellison, has not issued a detailed response to the ban. Meanwhile, European regulators have warned TikTok that insufficient protections for minors could result in fines reaching six percent of the platform's annual revenue.
