A shift to a stateless protocol core aims to remove barriers for widespread corporate LLM deployments.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source standard for AI interactions with data sources and tools, has received its most significant update since its launch over a year ago, according to reporting from Ars Technica.

Lead maintainers David Soria Parra and Den Delimarsky, both of whom work at Anthropic, announced that the protocol core is now stateless. This transition from a bidirectional stateful protocol to a request/response stateless protocol means requests are no longer tied to a specific server instance session. Soria Parra noted that this was a highly requested feature intended to improve reliability and scalability for MCP servers.

Originally designed for local machine use, the updated specification introduces several enterprise-focused enhancements, including:

* Header-based routing * Multi Round-Trip Requests * Cacheable list results * Authorization hardening * A formal extensions framework * Updated Tier 1 SDKs

To further support enterprise stability, a new deprecation policy mandates a minimum 12-month window between the formal deprecation of a feature and its removal, with exceptions granted only for critical security updates.

While originally introduced by Anthropic, the protocol is managed by the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation. Ars Technica reports that Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and OpenAI also contribute to the project, though some principal maintainers currently work at Anthropic.
